I said it a while ago… AI image generation will be the standard sooner than later. This quote from “The Past's Perspective On The Future Of Artificial Intelligence” (one of my first newsletters) in January 2023, says it best.
On a broad enough timescale, AI writing and drawing tools will be just as standard as a designer using Photoshop today.”
As of a few days ago, you can now use Photoshop's ‘generative fill’ feature to generate new visuals for images.
Here’s another quote from an early newsletter I’m reminded of after seeing this feature.
As generalized and specialized AI services like chatGPT progress, we begin entering the world of ‘If you can think it, you can create it.’
While we get closer to simply thinking something and seeing it created, I’ll continue preaching that hands-on skills with these AI tools are important for your growth as a creative. There is still a level of technical know-how required to bring your thoughts to reality in Photoshop, and a basic understanding of non-AI Photoshop tools will get you much further than zero basic understanding of Photoshop tools.
Hands-on practice stays undefeated.
I’m super impressed with the tool’s ability to generate things that look close to belonging in your image. Adobe is the largest player in photo editing, and they rolled out an impressive feature that makes it easier to create.
The great thing about this feature is that all the training images are from the Adobe Stock library, meaning no images were used without the permission and compensation of the artists.
So, let’s talk about how to use the new AI feature in Photoshop.
To access the feature, you’ll need to download the Photoshop Beta version through the Adobe Creative Cloud.
Once you have the Photoshop Beta selected, all you need to do is create a selection, then the ‘Generative Fill’ will pop up, and you simply need to type what you want to see.
If you, your school, or your employer pays for the full Adobe Suite, you can download it at no additional cost.
Unlike popular AI image generators like Midjourney or DALLE-2, image generation in Photoshop doesn’t cost any extra money.
This is the biggest win for AI productivity since chatGPT was launched.
Personal Note
I just spent a week back home in Michigan to spend some much-needed time with my family. I’ve been in NYC for about 4 months and was absolutely feeling homesick. I realized my presence on my social media profiles has dwindled, which is ok. I spent some time disconnected from social and it was nice.
I’m only a few days away from switching jobs. I’ll still be in the VaynerMedia ecosystem, soon to be running the VeeFriends Instagram account. From my understanding, I’ll be one of the main people in charge of ensuring the VeeFriends cartoon characters have stories to tell. I’m just so excited about that.
I’ve always lived my life willing to share information about my personal life in hopes that people can learn from any lessons that come from it. I see this new role at VeeFriends as an opportunity to use the characters as a vessel to share lessons from my personal life.
In the past few weeks, I haven’t felt like the normal version of myself. It feels like the normal emotions I feel have been shaved off at the end. It’s harder for me to get excited about things I’m usually excited about. I think I’ve fallen into a bit of a mundane routine. I’m sure that stems from a bit of career & personal stagnation, plus feeling homesick, plus getting my bearings in a brand-new city. Different environment and different friends. It’s absolutely been an adjustment.
The good thing is I think I’ll look back on this time in New York City and think that it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Taking the leap is always the right decision. Otherwise, you’ll feel bad about thinking about what could have been.
In the realm of paying attention to AI updates, I haven't paid that much attention. It just hasn’t captured my interest like it used to. I think it has to do with how it’s now mainstream. I love tech that most people don’t know about. Now everyone knows about chatGPT, and to be fair, I hope everyone actually uses the Photoshop update mentioned in this newsletter. I think it’s going to help a lot of people bring their ideas to life.
I will continue doing AI updates, as I think the next chapter at VeeFriends is going to awaken a new drive to expand my knowledge, which I will share with you.
I just think it’s important to not judge yourself for going through human emotions. I’m in a bit of a precarious spot because I’m more of a ‘public figure’ than most people are, so I have a responsibility to stay interesting and relevant. That’s the path I chose, and feeling these emotions are part of the journey. I’m sure you can relate in some way.
As always, I’m wishing you the best and I just need to thank you for being interested and staying interested in this newsletter as I navigate this time in my life. I think we’ll both come out on the other side glad that we stayed the course.
As someone who dreamt all through childhood of living in NYC in her mid-20’s and now will always live with that what-if, I can confidently say you’re right and I’m glad you took that leap for yourself! I love living vicariously through you, and that feeling of not feeling like your normal self is something I experience every time I move to a new state. I bet that initial excitement and drive you had when you first moved will come back. Switching jobs in the midst of adjusting to a whole new life in the city is daunting, but if anyone can handle it, it’s you man! Good luck with everything! And as always, thanks for the knowledge!
