🔴 A Quick Note About This Weekend
This weekend, America experienced the 7th assassination attempt on a U.S. president resulting in injury or worse in our 247-year history.
For many of us, it’s the first one we’ve experienced in our lifetime.
It’s also the first to happen during the age of social media.
Maybe it’s recency bias but this time seems different because regardless of facts or intent, anyone's opinion can impact millions of people’s beliefs.
I’ve seen a lot of language online that dehumanizes the other side.
Saying things like “Democrats are…”, “Republicans want…”, and “Liberals keep…” divide people when we need unity.
We as humans are more nuanced than “Democrat” or “Republican”.
Let’s not use this type of language to cause more of a divide.
In case you didn’t know, the assassination of Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand on 28 June 1914 set off a chain of events that led to World War I in early August 1914.
Events like this weekend can be a great divider or a great unifier, depending on how you choose to view and engage.
So, going forward, let’s focus on what we can control and not stir the pot online because we’re bored.
Let’s not drool over the drama of who said what, because that’s not productive either.
Find something productive to do with your time and put some good into the world.
